Making music

On the peninsula to perform at the Kenai Peninsula State Fair in Ninilchik:

• The Flying Other Brothers: 10 p.m. today, Duggan’s Waterfront Pub; 9 p.m. Saturday, the fair. G.E. Smith, guitar player/musical player for Saturday Night Live for 10 years, will be joining them for these performances.

• Zilla: 8 p.m. Friday, Kenai Peninsula State Fair.

Having a ball

ARTrageous ball, celebrating Homer’s ARTrageous people and one of many events during the month of August, happens at the Homer Elks Lodge at 7 p.m. Saturday. The theme is “Wear White — Get Painted,” with partiers becoming the canvas for local artists. Music will be provided by Tamba! Marimba. Evening events include a wienie cook-off and a “big tease” hair competition. Admission is $25. Tickets are available at Homer Council on the Arts and the Homer Bookstore.

Make a mask

Artist Gail Baker is teaching a workshop of “Big Masks in Bas Relief,” with students making sculpted papier mache framed faces. Workshop times are 6-9 p.m. Aug. 18, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 19, and noon-4 p.m. Aug. 20. Fee is $120 plus a $10 material fee. Mosaic madness

A workshop on “Mosaics From Nature,” taught by Christine Smith, will be offered at Across the Bay Tent and Breakfast Adventure Company Friday through Sunday. Fee is $340. For more information, call 235-3633.

Art for credit

A variety of art classes are being offered at Kachemak Bay Campus, Kenai Peninsula College-University of Alaska Anchorage, with classes beginning Aug. 28. Included are painting, sculpture, history of world art, drawing, individual art of postmodernism and ceramics. Classes will be held at West Campus and relocated to the new 1,000-square-foot art studio currently being constructed. A five-week “Appreciating Opera” class will be taught by Maria Allison, and a semester-long poetry writing workshop will be held by Eva Saulitis. For more information, call the campus at 235-7743.

College calls for manuscripts

Kenai Peninsula College’s Kenai River Campus in Soldotna invites the public to submit literature for consideration for publication in KPC’s “Driftwood 2007: Literature and Art from the Kenai and Beyond.” Deadline for submission is Dec. 15. Upcoming symphony events

The following dates are included on Anchorage Symphony’s September calendar. For more information, call (907) 8668.

• Sept. 18: Orchestra string auditions, 7-10 p.m., Sydney Laurence Theatre, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Auditions are by appointment only. There are permanent openings for violin I and II, viola, cello, bass and third oboe/English horn.

• Sept. 19: Orchestra percussion and wind auditions, 6-10 p.m., Sydney Laurence Theatre, ACPA. Auditions are by appointment only. All instruments are welcome to audition to be substitutes.
