On Aug. 15, the assembly will consider introduction of Ordinance 2006-19-15 that would accept and appropriate a $30,000 state grant to Anchor Point Senior Citizens Inc., which wants to build a four-plex senior housing unit on property it owns.
A public hearing on the ordinance is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 19.
In a memo to the assembly, borough grants manager Bonnie Golden said the money would be for pre-development activities. The project was among the borough’s 2006 legislative priorities, and was funded in the state’s latest capital budget signed by Gov. Frank Murkowski in July. The Anchor Point senior corporation intends to use the money for site review, soil analysis, environmental studies, cost analysis, schematic design, preliminary engineering and project management, Golden said. The state grant would be combined with other corporation revenue to cover the costs of those tasks, she said.
The borough will take $885 of the grant to cover administrative costs of administering the grant.
Gary Sheridan, the senior group’s housing committee chairman, said the project would be an independent living quarters-type facility well equipped for people with handicaps.
A $20,000 grant through the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation approved last year helped launch the project, and the corporation hopes to apply for a construction grant through AHFC as soon as possible, he said.
It is still too early to say how much the four-plex would cost, but that should be known once design work is completed.
“We could possibly start construction with site development in the fall of 2007,” Sheridan said. “It could be completed by summer 2008.”
