“My gosh,” I said. “Why?”
“Because there is such a backlog of cases.”
“Why?”
“Because he told the truth — admitted what he did, instead of pleading ‘no contest.’”
He’s in jail because he told the truth? What kind of country have we become?
I called Nanwalek. I wondered how Lisa and the children were doing without their husband and father. I wondered if “Fun-in-the-Sun” was spoiled without Raymond. I wondered if my letters to the editor were an invasion of their privacy. I left a message on an answering machine. The voice on the machine was that of a chile, probably one of Grandma Juanita’s great-grandchildren.
I left my name and number as instructed. If they call back, I’ll keep you posted. Maybe they’ll tell me to keep my arrogant white nose out of their business. Either way, I’ll let you know.
