Homer Alaska - Letters

I would like to know why there is not a speed reduction zone or any school signage near the Fireweed Academy on East End Road? Young children attend school there (K-third grade) and the school is very close to this busy road. I know staff and parents are very vigilant, but if you compare this to Paul Banks School (where the actual school is a long way off the highway), it seems as though the city should be obligated to do something to safeguard the Fireweed students also. I thought this would have been done last year as soon as the city knew children would be attending the school there, and now when it is almost time for school to start again, there is still nothing in place.

For whatever reasons, the city has chosen to ignore this need. These are children young children who attend a school in our town and from my perspective need basic precautions for their safety.
