Homer’s Best Bets

Don’t they look cute with their big smiles, brand-new clothes, shiny XtraTufs and hip new hairstyles? Here it is, the start of the new school year as bright minds embark on the bold adventure of makin’ educashun happen.

But enough about the teachers. The students look pretty spiff, too. In case you were busy slamming silvers at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon, hello, public school starts Monday. It’s easy to tell. About this time of year, parents start waxing philosophical about higher learning, the importance of preparing our children for the future, blah blah blah — when what they’re really thinking is, “Hallelujah! The rug rats are finally out of the house.”

Well, don’t get all smug, Betsteroids. The time will come when those kids go off to college and don’t return. That sweet little boy with the red tennis shoes? That adorable girl with the long blonde curls? They’ll grow up too fast and soon enough be mature (well, mostly) adults with like real lives and everything — hey, just like us.

So cherish those short 13 years. Like the fireweed blooming, they shoot up quickly and soon enough fly away. Slow down to enjoy your children — and while you’re at it, slow down on the roads so they can get safely to and from school. And before the homework piles up, hey, take one last summer weekend to enjoy some of these Best Bets:

BEST LOTS OF PLUCK BET: Those Bacot Basement Babes are back. If you didn’t see this jazz harp trio earlier in the summer, you have one more chance to hear them at 7:30 p.m. today and 8:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Pier One Theatre. Tickets are $16 general admission, with discounts for seniors, students and Raven’s Club members.

BEST EARLY WARNING BET: The Betster would list this as a Best Bet later in the month, but hey, the truth is, if you don’t get in line at 6 p.m. Friday to buy your Iron Chef tickets, you’re not going to go to the way-cool Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic fund-raiser to be held Sept. 4 at The Saltry in Halibut Cove. Tickets are $100 at the clinic on Ben Walters Lane. It’s first-come, first-served, and the tickets go fast.

BEST WHY GO TO PALMER BET?: Who needs to drive 300 miles for the Alaska State Fair when we have the Kenai Peninsula State Fair right here in Ninilchik? The fair runs 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20 for a family pass, $7 for adults and children 13 and older, $5 for seniors, $4 for children ages 6-12, with kids under 6 free.

BEST THIRD FRIDAY BET: Homer has so many art exhibits opening sometimes we have to spread them out over the month. Opening at the Pratt Museum from 6-8 p.m. Friday is “Aquatic Influences,” a group show by artists Fran Reed, Susan Kinglsey and Asia Freeman.

BEST ANNIE MAY BET: It sounds like the name of a fishing boat, but anime is what Japanese call the art of animated film. At the best little movie theatre in Alaska, sometimes in between action-adventure movies and chick flicks, the Homer Theatre shows, well, things like “Howl’s Moving Castle.” The film by Hayao Miyazaki is at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and definitely a must-see.
