The Alaska Statehood Celebration Commission is hosting a statewide competition for a 50th anniversary statehood logo. Competition runs from Aug. 15-Oct. 31. The winning logo will belong to the state of Alaska. No prize will be awarded, but artist recognition will be given. The Homer Theatre will show the animated Japanese film “Howl’s Moving Castle” at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The movie comes from celebrated filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, who created “Spirited Away,” the first film to make $200 million before reaching American theaters. It offers moviegoers a different taste of animation, according to online reviewers. “Howl’s Moving Castle” is rated PG.
Homer Film Society presents “An Introduction to Experimental Filmmaking Workshop” Sept. 6-18. Topics include fundamentals such as framing, storyboarding, camera movement, sound and in-camera editing. Participants will produce their own independent short film. For ages 16 and up. Cost is $300. The Pratt Museum’s fund-raiser “Rags to Ritz 2005,” scheduled for Nov. 5, will explore 20 years of history, creative fund raising and partying that have helped develop the museum.
