Unlike ConocoPhillips’ leases, Aurora’s leases in the Anchor Point area are located onshore, said Randy Jones, Aurora’s manager of land and negotiations. The company hopes to drill the Endeavour prospect sooner and produce oil or gas faster than ConocoPhillips can, he said.
Aurora has secured, or is in the process of securing, close to 143,000 acres of land in the Cook Inlet basin, Jones said. Less than 10,000 acres of that is in the Anchor Point area, some of it right under the post office and elsewhere around town.
“The purpose of the meeting is to have Aurora personnel explain what our drilling intentions are onshore,” he said. Company representatives will discuss how the company drills and how it disposes of the resulting fluid and solid materials, and safety considerations. The company has invited Native and other organizations to participate, Jones said.
Many of the company’s drilling locations are away from rivers and streams, he said. Aurora hopes to complete permitting procedures and being drilling in about six months, Jones said. It could start drilling at a pad used by Unocal four years ago.
Aurora recently completed testing at a gas field at Three Mile Creek on the west side of Cook Inlet and is developing production facilities there.
