Peninsula schools miss AYP
By McKibben Jackinsky
Staff writer
There are more than 30 targets that schools must reach in order to make AYP adequate yearly progress as set by the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Included are set participation rates, or the number of students that must be tested in each of nine groups of students limited English proficiency, disabilities, economically disadvantaged, Caucasians, Alaska Natives, American Indians, African-Americans, Asians and Hispanics. In small schools, participation rates can sometimes mean the difference of one student.
Schools not meeting AYP are designated in need of improvement. Schools not meeting AYP for one year are considered Level 1 schools, Level 2 for two years, Level 3 for three years, Level 4 for four years and Level 5 for five years. If a school reaches Level 2, it must meet AYP for two consecutive years to be removed from the list. Consequences are established for each year a school does not meet AYP. They vary depending on a school’s receipt of federal Title 1 funding used to improve academic achievement of disadvantaged students.
