OK, with all the fabulous good-looking people around here dressed in the latest fashions, sure, you might think we're all movie stars. Not so. We just have great bone structure and weird haircuts. Our couture? Sally Ann on Pioneer Avenue or that really big garage sale last weekend on Kachemak Drive.
So don't think you're in Los Angeles, Toto. Just click your ruby Xtratufs together and say, "There's no place like Homer. There's no place like Homer." And hope for a good drenching rain.
Whether smoke or rain, though, there's always something cool to do, like some of these Best Bets.
BEST FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT BET: So did they like redo the Pratt Museum or something? It looks kinda different. Well, duh. If you haven't been to the museum in a while, here's a good chance to check out the new exhibits when the Pratt Museum hosts this month's Homer Chamber of Commerce Mixer from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday at the museum. Chamber mixers are free and open to members or guests.
BEST YOU GO GIRLS (AND BOYS, TOO) BET: Homer's running season continues with the 10th Annual Run for Women starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mariner Park gazebo on the Homer Spit. It's a run for women, not just of women. Kids, families, men and women of all ages are welcome to run, walk and stroll and it's all for a good cause: breast cancer programs. Proceeds fund free mammograms. Registration is 8:30 a.m. the day of the race, or Thursday and Friday at Kachemak Bay Family Planning, South Peninsula Women's Services, SPH Education Department, the Bay Club and Curves for Women.
BEST TODAY, THE SPIT; TOMORROW, BROADWAY BET: Shirley Timmreck is one of those multi-talented artists in Homer. She paints! She sculpts! She writes plays! Her musical "Louisa" wowed 'em at the Edward Albee Theatre Conference in Valdez, and played in Boston. It opens Friday at Pier One Theatre on the Spit, with shows at 8:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 7:30 pm. Sunday and next Thursday.
BEST CIVIC DUTY BET: Tuesday our children go back to their jobs getting educated so they can be smart, hard-working citizens and support us in our old age. Before you parents start celebrating a little peace and quiet around the house, after you drop off the kids at school, do your civic duty, too: vote. Polling for the primary election runs 7 a.m.-8 p.m. There are some contested races for Republican and Democrat Party seats, so don't think you can sit this one out.
BEST UPPING THE RATIO BET: Homer has more churches than bars heck, even more churches than espresso stands, if you can believe it. St. Augustine's Episcopal Church shares space with Homer United Methodist Church, but the congregation dreams of a place of its own. To start making their dreams a reality, this Wednesday at 6 p.m. they dedicate and have blessed their future church site on the Sterling Highway just west of the Bidarka Inn.
Honest, folks. You haven't been magically transplanted to Los Angeles. That isn't a wildfire roaring up the Hollywood Hills just Crossman Ridge. The view from Baycrest Hill of Kachemak Bay? Nope, you're not looking at LA on a clear day from the Griffith Observatory. Really, this is Homer, Alaska, with that stop-you-in-your-tracks view just like the New York Times said the Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea, not the Cosmic Soup.
