Author Margaret Doyle will sign copies of her book, "The Fisherman's Quilt," on Monday at the Homer Bookstore. Doyle has lived in Alaska for several years working as a journalist, musician and grant-writer. Her book is said to be filled with adventure, romance and a portrait of the late 20th century American marriage. The book signing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m.
College offers art classes
General registration for art classes at the Kachemak Bay Campus will be held this week through Aug. 27. Most classes begin the week of Aug. 30.
This fall's offerings include ceramics with Carl Bice, beginning, intermediate and advanced painting, two-dimensional design with Paula Dickey, beginning drawing with Asia Freeman and history of world art II. These courses can be taken by the general public as well as those seeking to earn a four-year degree in art or other areas.
This coming semester's creative writing classes will be fiction writing, taught by Rich Chiappone, as well as a five-week workshop taught by Eva Saulitis on the "Poetry of Invisible Ocean Life of Kachemak Bay." Poems will be inspired by Kachemak Bay's microscopic ocean world.
Lance Petersen will teach history of philosophy and introduction to theater. A new five-week course titled "Appreciating Opera," taught by Maria Allision, will be held Sept. 28 to Oct. 26.

The Pratt Museum is now seeking donated works of art for the Ritz 2004 Art Show. The show will be on display at the museum from Oct. 1 through Nov. 6. The Ritz Art Preview reception will be Oct. 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Ritz 2004 gala and auction will be held Nov. 6 at the museum. Participating artists may choose to receive one 25-percent ticket discount or recover 25 percent of the auction purchase price of their donated piece. Submissions are limited to one piece this year due to new space constraints. All pieces must be at the museum by Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed to assist Paula Dickey and Gaye Wolfe with planning and installing the show. Art workshops coming
Gail Baker will hold a mask making workshop Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. at the Artmaker Studio, 1060 East End Road. Cost is $55 plus $20 for materials and includes a videotape of you and your mask in action.

The Flying Other Brothers will play at Alice's Champagne Palace on Thursday at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 for KBBI members and $22 for nonmembers. This collection of San Francisco musicians includes former members of Phil Lesh and Friends, Jefferson Starship, and Roy Rogers as well as others. They have recorded with the likes of Jerry Garcia and John Lee Hooker.
"Other Brothers take you back in time when musicians took chances on stage and created music," said Mike Hayes of Downward Dog Productions, which brings the band to Homer.

KBBI is seeking designs for its 25th Anniversary mug to add to its collection. Designs should be 2 inches high by 7 inches wide in one or two colors. She is co-creator of the popular "Writer's Sampler of the Literary Arts Council" of the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. Her work is published in "Sonoma Poets Collection II"; "Tiny Lights: A Journal of Personal Essay"; "Jasmine Nights and Monkey Pluck"; "Zebulon Nights" and the forthcoming "Steeped: In the World of Tea."
