P.O. box rates questioned
Have you paid your post office box rent at the Homer Post Office lately? Well, prepare yourself for a shock. Here are the rates: size 2 box (the smallest), $100 a year, up from $80; size 3, medium, $200 a year; size 4, large, $410 a year and size 5, extra large, $660 a year.

I visited the post office and asked about these nice postal boxes around Homer, now that we annexed into the city. The neighborhood delivery and collection box units, or NDCBUs, are free for people on city delivering routes. I think rental post office boxes go up to help pay for them.

I was told by the postmaster that I could put my own box up and get mail delivered instead of paying these outlandish rates. From the top of Homer hill to West Hill Road there are less than eight mailboxes. Mostly, if you put one up it will be destroyed along with your mail. Who wants that? By the way, Seward's size 2 post office boxes went up to $44 a year and the size 5 extra-large box went up to $250 a year. Seward has no city delivery, either.

If you're concerned about this issue, you can write the Postal Rate Commission, Washington, D.C., 20268; Bill Fatterhoff, district manager, or Geno Castignetti, 3720 Barrow Street, Anchorage 99599-0998, or call (907) 261-5486.
