'Good shabbos' Rabbis Yechezkel Wolff, left, and Menachem Lipsker pause from preparing a shabbos meal at the Homer Senior Center last week. Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., the rabbis are students at the West Coast Talmudic Seminary in Los Angeles, and were in Homer last weekend for Chabad-Lubavitch. About a dozen people attended shabbos, including Mary Friedman, who described herself as "the oldest Jewish woman in Homer."
All right, you slackers, let's get back to work. Hey, we've got houses to build, fish to catch, tourists to serve, hay to rake and a dang paper to get out. Yo, lazybones, quit leaning on that shovel and dig. We're Americans, by gum, the most productive nation in the world, so let's put our noses to the grindstone and our cliches to rest and work.

Wait a second why? We didn't move to le piccolo villaggio cosmico dal mare for the joy or endless labor, did we? That's kinda an Anchorage thing, don't you think? Shouldn't life be a bit slower-paced here? You wouldn't know it by a lot of people in town. Holy sweatsox, Betsteroids, some of you have been working non-stop since June.

Well, Monday is your day, you toilers.

The rest of the world celebrates the working class on May Day, but that's so Marxist, don't you think? We have our own Labor Day, the first Monday in September.

So kick back and relax. Hang with your friends and family. Recreate sensibly. Sleep in, eat a big breakfast, read a good book and enjoy your day. You deserve it. So treat yourself and try out some of these Best Bets:

BEST THEY WERE GREEN ONCE BET: Oh no! That precious chemical chlorophyll is fadin' away and everything turning brown. This is it, your last chance. Head up the hill to East Skyline Drive at 10:30 a.m. today for the final "Learn Your Local Plants" walk at the Wynn Nature Center.

BEST SERVICE! BET: Ah, yes, back in the day you sure could swat the ball. We all know that, so here's a chance for you former volleyball stars to dust off your kneepads and show these young punks how the game is played at the third annual "Play Like Crazy" Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

It runs noon-5 p.m. at the high school. Players of all ages can participate at $10 a player. Register by 10 a.m. Proceeds support the Homer Mariner Volleyball team and the winning team plays the Mariner JV Team at 6 p.m.

BEST TURN AND FIGHT GRAVITY BET: If you ran the Spit Run in June, you can double the race on Sunday in the Seventh Annual Homer Half-Marathon, sponsored by the Homer Foundation. The 13.1-mile race starts at 10 a.m. at Homer High School and goes to the end of the Homer Spit and back. Registration in advance is $30 or $40 the morning of the race. There is also a free 1-mile Fun Run/Walk.

BEST MY BOSUN CAN BEAT YOUR BOSUN BET: Think your fishing crew has the right stuff? Bring 'em on! The Homer Chamber of Commerce's Seafair starts at 1 p.m. Monday at the Homer Marine Terminal on the Homer Spit. Crews can compete in events like damage control, immersion suit relay, abandon ship and signal building. Win prizes, money and most of all, braggin' rights.
