Cowboy shooting scheduled
Congratulations to our shooting friends in Homer. The shooters in the Central Peninsula were glad to read the article in the Peninsula Clarion which indicated that the years of trying to get a gun range are apparently finally bearing fruit. Now the work begins!

We recognize that those of you who live in the Bahamas of the Kenai Peninsula may shoot all year round, but in our area we generally hang up the pistols in the winter (or go to Palmer and shoot with the 49ers indoors). That does have an advantage, in that it gives us most of the winter to plan the best way of smuggling newly acquired cowboy guns into the house without the spouse recognizing that we have them, or it gives us most of the winter to plan the way to win the spouse over to Cowboy (and Cowgirl) shooting sports, (CAS) so that if he/she wants to buy new guns also we then have the opportunity of bringing our new acquisitions into the living room with theirs, without it becoming awkward. It also gives us some time to reload for the next summer, and to revise our costume.

If you come in on the Sterling Highway, turn left onto the Spur Highway and drive toward Kenai until you pass over Beaver Creek, and then turn right onto Shotgun Lane and drive right to the range. If you come via K-Beach, go over the Kenai River Bridge toward Kenai, and at the intersection with Beaver Creek Road turn right (careful on the sharp turn) and keep coming until it becomes Shotgun Lane (after you cross the Spur Highway) and then keep going on to the gun range. The gate will open about 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, for set up; registration should be about 9:45 a.m., and you can smell gun smoke about 10 a.m. Eye and ear protection are required for all shooters and observers.

If you don't have your own cowboy guns yet, there are usually some shooters who will let you try theirs. Bring some 12 gauge cartridges with lead shot number 4 to number 9 in a light field load, and you can shoot one of our shotguns. Bring along a pocket full of commercial (no hand loads for other people's guns) of pistol caliber ammo, lead bullets, no gas checks and not over 1,000 feet per second, and you can likely find someone who will let you shoot their revolvers and lever gun

If you like guns and clothing of military folks from 1858 to 1902, I am also a recruiter for the Grand Army of the Frontier, where you can shoot your .43 whatever military rifle, or your double action British revolver. Check it out at www.grandarmyofthefrontier.org/mission.htm. You must be a member of SASS and the 49ers to belong to the Scouts.
