But there is at least one person smiling about the current state of fishing Joseph Volk of Reedsville, W. Va.
His 345.6-pound flatfish currently leads the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby, and if fishing doesn't improve soon he might be on his way to a big payday. The derby will run until September 30, the longest closing date in tournament history, so there is still time to catch him and a hefty halibut.
The rain hasn't hurt silver salmon fishing on the Anchor River in fact it might have helped. These fun-to-catch fish prefer deeper, cooler water, and that is what they are getting.
Limits of two per day have been caught with greater frequency.
Dolly Varden can be found all throughout the river at this point as they move around to the best food sources. Steelhead are also being caught from time to time. Trout and steelhead are catch and release only.
Good clamming tides began Thursday and will continue until Aug. 30. Get a permit for littlenecks and butters. A shovel, bucket, fishing license and determination will land you a limit of 60 razors.
