Be prepared
September is National Preparedness Month. In addition to encouraging people to put together their own 72-hour kit, the Kenai Peninsula Citizen Corps program is launching a campaign to assemble basic disaster supply kits for distribution to organizations that serve the elderly, poor and special needs clients.
Your help is needed. Between now and the end of September, the Citizen Corps needs help soliciting and collecting items and assembling the kits. If you have ideas or can help, please call Glenda Landua, Citizen Corps program coordinator, Kenai Peninsula Borough, Office of Emergency Management, (907) 262-2098 or e-mail: glandua@borough.kenai.ak.us.
Basic kit items include: a five-gallon bucket with a secure lid; a flashlight with extra batteries; a portable battery operated radio; extra batteries; a good quality non-electric can opener; two rolls of toilet paper; travel size shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste; small writing tablet and pen; emergency blanket (compact type); a small first aid kit; a whistle; two N-95 particle masks; and roll of duct tape. The Citizen Corps will add FEMA/ American Red Cross emergency preparedness checklists and (at least for the first 100 kits) a copy of the emergency preparedness manual: “It’s A Disaster!”
There is a supply drop-off location in Anchor Point at the Senior Center on Milo Fritz Road.
Monday is Labor Day, which means a long weekend for some. Hope you all get out there and enjoy the pleasures that Alaska has to offer. For those of you who are traveling up to the Alaska State Fair, be safe and have a great time.
