Resist the corporate oppressors who exploit the working class! How dare they deny us in-house espresso machines, all-you-can drink smoothie bars and weekly chair massages? Stand up for your rights! Demand fair pay for showing up sober 40 hours a week.
Working schmoes, Monday is your day. Who cares that the rest of the world celebrates workers on May Day. That is like so French. This is America, dang it, and if we wanna call the first Monday in September Labor Day, then we will.
Set down those hammers. Hang up the fishing nets. Turn off the computer. Relax. Sleep in. After a summer of hard work, we workers deserve a day off. Grab one last day of sunshine of course it’s going to be sunny on Monday and spend time with your family. Fire up the barbie. Char some salmon. Pay one last visit to all those tourist-oriented businesses that fold up their tents on Tuesday.
To get yourself in the mood for some relaxin’, yo, try out some of these Best Bets:
BEST YOU KNOW THE DRILL BET: Great food. Hip people. Cool art. Yup, it’s First Friday again. The art scene in Homer has gotten so big, if you get into a deep conversation about art v. craft at the Bunnell, you might never make it up the hill to all the other galleries. Hey, you can always hit the galleries after the crowd, but then you miss hangin’ with the artists. See this week’s Arts page for all the details.
BEST SO MANY BOOKS BET: “So many books, so little time,” the saying goes. And how do you get so many books? By hitting book sales. South Peninsula Haven House is holding a fund-raiser from 4-7 p.m. during First Friday at 435 E. Pioneer Ave. next to Homer Travel. Stock up on your winter reading, or freshen up that to-be-read shelf.
BEST MIX IT UP BET: Hey, Friday is getting out of hand here, but if you need one more event to go to, swing by the Alibi on Pioneer Avenue for the monthly Homer Chamber of Commerce Mixer from 5-7 p.m. Meet chamber members and learn about local businesses.
BEST SOUL OF THE IRISH BET: You could make a movie out of the idea: Irish musicians who put a little American spin to their music. Oh, right, that was “The Commitments.” If you want to see the real thing, check out the Young Dubliners and their Celtic rock starting at 10 p.m. Friday at where else? Duggan’s Waterfront Pub.
BEST FREE YOYO BET: It happens. Sometimes our marine mammal friends get in a little trouble, and next thing you know they’re spending some downtime at the Alaska SeaLife Center getting back in shape. The good news is that when rehabilitated, they get released back into the wild. At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, staff from the SeaLife Center talk about their work, and then at 5 p.m., Yoyo, Keno and Blackjack three harbor seals rehabilitated at the center get released at Bishop’s Beach back into the bay.
