Homer's Best Bets

Here in the 21st century where the world is our distraction, we like to think we can juggle 93 tasks at once, and do 'em all with aplomb. Eat a bagel? Add a new Facebook friend? Text your kids to be out front stat cuz the Parentmobile is on its way? Oh, and primp for that hot date with the spousal other all while calculating the orbit of Pluto on your iPhone in scientific calculator mode? It's a cinch for a multitasking genius.

No, not really. Once again science shoots down conventional wisdom.

Roses for a star Jewel takes a break at her concert last month at the Mariner Theatre.

Multitaskers like to think they can do all sorts of things simultaneously. They're the types who have three computer screens with 23 windows open so they can work on 19 projects at once. They never shut off their cell phones, because they're jammed so tight in their ears they can't find the off switch.

In a study by some Stanford University scientists, it turns out that multitaskers can't do diddly. Scientists at first thought multitaskers were flippin' geniuses with superior brains who had mastered how to do more than one thing at a time, and pretty darn tootin' well, too. In the skeet shooting world of science, that theory got obliterated fast.

"I was sure they had some secret ability," Stanford professor Clifford I. Nass told the New York Times, "but it turns out that high multitaskers are suckers for irrelevancy."

So, there you go. Your momma was right when she told you to turn off the TV when you did your homework. Focus, kids, focus. Do one thing at a time, finish it and then do the next thing. Repeat as needed.

OK, some of us might never get anything done at that rate, not when it's deadline day and you have to put eye tracks on 32 pages of brilliant prose and all those amazing ads for our valued customers -- and then make necessary corrections, all while waiting for the last batch to print out and that stupid swirling circle of idleness to process whatever idiot command you just gave your computer. Where were we?

Oh yeah: multitasking. Don't do this. Relax, take it easy and enjoy life one day at a day, one event at a time, perhaps with these Best Bets:

BEST MUD BAY MADNESS BET: Forty fishing boats, 44 kayaks, 28 skiffs and 600 buoys. Somehow it's all supposed to come together at 2:30 p.m. Sunday for Voices for the Ocean, an aerial art event to raise awareness of ocean acidification. The fleet will spell out "SOS" in Mud Bay, and a photo will be taken from high above. Mariners wanting to help out should meet at 2 p.m. at Mako's Water Taxi. There's a party with great food and music from 3-5 p.m. at the boardwalk behind Mako's.

BEST IRONIC BET: Hip, literate urbanites tossing off clever bon mots -- no wait, that's the Greenwich Village Iron Man Triathlon. We're talking the Homer Iron Man, when women and men of awesome strength compete in a combined swim-bike-run. The triathlon starts at 8 a.m. Sunday with at 1,000-yard swim at the Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center at Homer High School. Cheer 'em on or compete.

BEST BIG VOICES BET: People in town know Jerami Youngblood as a dynamic hair stylist, but he also could be known as That Opera Guy. At 7:30 p.m. Youngblood and vocalists Emily Reidel and Dave Welty perform "Last Songs" at Bunnell Street Arts Center, an evening of arias and duets from classic operas and favorite musicals. Youngblood also lost most of his possessions in a recent house fire, so his friends will be passing the hat and holding an art auction to help him out. The event also benefits Reidel's budding opera career. Tickets are a suggested donation of $15.
