Under the guidance of international aerial artist John Quigley, boaters using buoys will form the letters "SOS" with the words "acid ocean" spelled out by kayakers inside the "O." Organizers hope to bring together 40 fishing boats, 44 kayaks, 28 skiffs and 600 buoys. Boaters meet at Mako's Water Taxi on the Homer Spit at 2 p.m., with the boat procession leaving the Homer Harbor at 2:30 p.m. A party follows with food and live music from 5-7 p.m. on the boardwalk behind Mako's. The party features speakers on ocean acidification and climate change.
"Fishermen and others who depend on Alaska's rich marine resource are coming together as one voice in support of reducing fossil fuel consumption and moving to a renewable energy future," said Alan Parks, AMCC outreach coordinator in Homer.
Anyone interested in participating in the flotilla is asked to call Parks at 399-3096. See www.voicesfortheocean.org for more information.
