Homer High School welcomes students

By McKibben Jackinsky
Staff writer

A lot of sunshine, a lot of food and a lot of polka music playing in the background. The Friday afternoon barbecue at Homer High School was the perfect way to welcome students for the 2009-2010 school year.

At the grill, on loan from the American Legion, were HHS faculty and staff Brian Carper, Emily Garrity and Mickey Todd, as well sa event organizer Joshua M. Brege, the schools metals and woods instructor.

An extended lunchtime ensured everyone would have time to eat and enjoy the school-wide get-together.

A cookout of this magnitude is nothing new to the school's new principal, Allan Gee, who comes to Homer from Centerville Elementary School in Snellville, Ga., a school of 850 students and 112 staff. Last spring, Centerville held a similar picnic with Gee cooking more than 1,000 hot dogs.

Observing the turnout of Friday's barbecue, Gee was already talking about another barbecue in the spring, with the school doors open to the community.
