Burning Basket starts next week

Homer's annual fall equinox tradition starts Sunday with "Imagine: A Basket of Remembrance and Unburdening." A community interactive, impermanent art experience facilitated by artist Mavis Muller, the event invites people to help build a large basket at Mariner Park. The basket is then burned the Sunday before the equinox. This year's schedule is:

• 3 p.m. Sunday, "Preheat" organizational meeting, Mariner Park;

• Noon-5 p.m. daily, Monday-Sept. 18, construction, Mariner Park;

• 1 p.m. Sept. 19, basket given as a gift; 6 p.m., potluck and artist talk; sunset, basket lighting, all at Mariner Park.

The burning ceremony includes fire spinning and drumming, and is a no-alcohol, no-dogs event. For more information, call Muller at 299-1478 or visit mavismullerart.com.
