An Indian dinner featuring halibut curry, a potato and chick pea dish, a cabbage-chard dish, whole wheat tortillas, coconut-flavored basmati rice, raita and chai and an auction benefiting SPROUT Nicaragua will be held at Kachemak Community Center, 5-8 p.m. Sept. 16. A minimum donation of $10 covers the meal and helps send Nicaraguan youngsters to school. The auction includes paintings done for the auction by Nicaraguan teens and brought to Homer by SPROUT founder Lauren Scharf. A rum and coffee raffle also will be held, with only 180 tickets being sold at $2 each, three for $5. SPROUT operates on about $10,000 a year. A portion is paid by local residents and businesses sponsoring specific university students. "but the lion's share is from the dinner, close to 75 percent," said Scharf.
