Football: Homer 28, Kodiak 6 The visiting Mariners kept their postseason hopes alive on Saturday with a dominant defensive performance against the Bears. Homer improved to 1-2 in the Northern Lights Conference and 2-3 overall, while Kodiak dropped to 0-2 and 2-3. Fullback Tayler Downes had 175 yards on the ground and three touchdowns, while Homer's defense had five interceptions, five sacks and a safety. The Bears had just 1 yard rushing in the game, while Homer amassed 226 yards on the ground. The Mariners face Seward at home on Saturday. The varsity team plays at 2 p.m. Volleyball: Homer defeats Kenai, falls to Wasilla The Wasilla volleyball team defeated host Homer on Friday, but on Saturday the host Mariners toppled the Kenai Kardinals. Both nights of play were Northern Lights Conference action. The Warriors notched 25-13, 26-24 and 25-15 victories. Homer grabbed 25-20, 25-21 and 25-20 victories against the Kardinals. This weekend the Mariners travel to Cordova to compete in the Fast Ferry Tournament. Cross country running: Kenai sweeps Homer Invite Kenai Central High School cross country running team swept the Homer Invitational last Friday in Homer. The Kenai girls scored 19 points to win the title behind individual champion Bailey Beeson. Runner-up Soldotna had 49 points. Beeson won in 19 minutes, 54 seconds. The Kenai boys scored 15 points to defeat runner-up Skyview by 40. Kenai swept the top three spots, with Travis Semmens running 17:37, Fox Michaud clocking 18:05, and Evan Atchley crossing the line at 18:10. The runners travel to compete in the Anchorage Christian School races this weekend.
