Outside of a few crummy weeks in June and July, the weather here is absolutely fabulous. Just as the Scots have convinced hordes of Europeans that Scottish weather sucks, so we Homerites promote Kachemak Bay’s universally miserable summers.
If word gets out that Homer has a climate to die for, more Outsiders would build 10,000-square-foot summer cabins. More people looking for a refuge from scorching Lower 49 summers would move here and jack up real estate prices. Summers like this separate the riff from the raff.
Pay no attention to these crisp fall days, these clear nights or those fields of glorious red fireweed. Homer is gray, gray, gray, wet and gloomy, just like an Edinburgh spring. There’s nothing to do in town, not even things like these Best Bets:
BEST IMAGINE NO MORE BET: The librarians are dusting the shelves and shining up the reading bar. Get in line by 1 p.m. Saturday and be one of the first to visit the new Homer Public Library. Forget the naysayers. The Betster got a sneak peek, and the new library is absolutely fabulous. The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting is at 1 p.m., followed by tours and — what else? — story hour in the Joy Griffin Children’s Library. Don’t worry: if you stand in the library slack jawed and keep muttering, “Wow,” the librarians won’t shush you — they’re too busy smiling. The library officially opens at 10 a.m. Monday, and local authors read at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
BEST PRACTICE, PRACTICE BET: You know the old joke about how you get to Carnegie Hall? It holds true for the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. Local violinist Heidi Senungetuk plays there next month with Anchorage percussionist and vocalist Steve Alvarez. You can catch a preview of their performance at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bunnell Street Gallery.
SO LONG, THANKS FOR THE BIG FISH BET: Longtime Homer Chamber of Commerce director Derotha Ferraro moves up the hill to her new job at South Peninsula Hospital next week. From 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, stop by the chamber and say good-bye — and thanks for all her hard work.
BEST EASY COMMUTE BET: Homer area Kenai Peninsula Borough assembly members burn up the miles attending borough meetings up north. This week they only have to drive to Homer City Hall, when at 7 p.m. Tuesday the assembly meets in the Cowles Council Chambers. Listen in or testify and see your assembly in action.
