Derby closes in on closing date

By McKibben Jackinsky
Staff Writer

The end of the 2009 Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby is almost in sight. Seems like only yesterday it was May 1 and fishermen were dropping hooks into the water, hoping to hook into the big one. Now it's less than two weeks until the derby winds up Sept. 30.

Chong Daughtry, second from left, currently holds second place for the month of September in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby with a 186-pound halibut caught while fishing on Bob's Trophy Charters with Capt. Josh Brooks aboard the Huntress. Daughtry also leads lady anglers for the month. With her are her husband, Robert Daughtry, left, Brooks, and Brooks' deckhand, Jenn.

Not much time.

Unless you're Thomas Youngblood, that is. This hometown fisherman landed a 354.6-pound monster June 26, while fishing on In-2-Fishin Charters with Capt. Ron Hurley aboard the Sweet T. Youngblood's managed to hold onto the derby lead, but the party's not over.

Standings for the month of September are:

First place: 186.4-pound halibut caught Sept. 5 by Anthony Sandoval of Anchorage on Ocean Hunter Charters with Capt. Keith Kalke aboard the Ocean Hunter;

Second place: 186-pound halibut caught Sept. 8 by Chong Daughtry of The Colony, Texas, on Bob's Trophy Charters with Capt. Josh Brooks aboard the Huntress;

Third place: 150.4-pound halibut caught Sept. 7 by Michael Dunkelberger of Anchorage on Bob's Trophy Charters with Capt. Josh Brooks aboard the Huntress;

Fourth place: 117.8-pound halibut caught Sept. 6 by Aksel Buholm of Anchorage on Bob's Trophy Charters with Capt. Josh Brooks aboard the Huntress.

Daughtry also is the lead lady angler this month, with her 186-pound catch. This puts Daughtry in a spot similar to that of Dora Orendayn of Corona Del Mar, Calif. On Aug. 8, Orendayn hooked into a 273.6-pound halibut, and, by month's end, found herself in first place for the month and lead lady angler. Only able to claim one prize, she opted for the $1,000 first place for the month, making Connie Dunphy of Anchorage the top lady angler for August with her 183-pound fish.

"(Daughtry) will have to make a decision if she stays in second place what prize she wants," said Derby Coordinator Paula Frisinger. "We currently have Kathleen Zinn of Valdez waiting on the side lines with her 69.8-pound halibut which is next in line to claim the lady angler prize caught with Capt. Josh Brooks."

Frisinger urged the female fishermen not to give up.

"So, lady a anglers, don't stop fishing," Frisinger said. "Bring me a bigger halibut than 69.8 pounds and you could have a chance still to win the Lady Angler prize. Fish on, ladies."

Yako (Jack) Boru of Fosston, Minn., remains the only derby fisherman to land a left-handed halibut. He was fishing Aug. 29 on Captain B's Alaskan C's Adventures with Capt. Bryan Bondioli aboard the Ashtikan.

No tagged fish have been caught so far this month. Nor has anyone released a fish.

With Sept. 30 just around the corner, Frisinger said, "Come on fishermen and women, let's end this derby season with a bang."

Homer has a two-halibut limit per day, per person. Derby tickets must be purchased prior to fishing in the derby.
