Homer's Emily Schmidt competes in the girls' 200-yard individual medley event at the Homer Invitational swim meet Sept. 12.
Boys and girls swimmers from Kodiak put on a show, collecting first place finishes in several events on their way to the top of the team standings.
The Homer girls' team finished fourth overall while the boys edged out East Anchorage to secure a fifth place finish. Both teams also managed fourth place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay.
In individual boys' events, Alder Fletcher finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 0.07 seconds -- a personal best time -- while Kyle Wentz also took second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:23.11.
The Homer diving team made a splash at the invite, as well, with Lindsey Seneff and Sophie Ogle taking third and fifth place in the 1-meter event and newcomer Garrett Hall finishing fourth overall.
The strongest Mariner performance of the weekend may have been turned in by the boys' 200-yard freestyle relay team -- made up of Fletcher, Tyler Wentz, Kyle Wentz and Richard Ginter -- when they placed third out of a crowded field of 19 teams with a time of 1:39.79.
"They were beautiful. They just looked really good and everything about that relay was really, really good," said Ivy-Borland.
Ivy-Borland credited her assistant coaches, the pool staff and parents -- especially the Arndt family -- for pulling off the complex, sometimes chaotic, event.
"Our parents were awesome. They pulled it all off while I just showed up and coached the kids. We have a great group of parents," she said.
The Mariners will stay at home for Friday's dual meet with Wasilla, scheduled for 4 p.m. at Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center.

"It went well," said Homer Head Coach Anna Borland-Ivy. "The Invite is a preview of what Region III will be like. It's good for the swimmers to see where they stand in their events. It looks like we have a pretty fast region."
