Fall a great time to explore Anchor Point

This is a great time to take a walk. Those golden paths are carpeted with colorful leaves. Grab a friend or take a neighbor you haven’t seen in a while and get out there and enjoy the great outdoors.

Keep your patience — the road construction looks like it is going to be around for awhile. Keep your eyes wide open while traveling.

It seems we have some restless people who have nothing better to do than break into homes. The North Fork Road has been hit a few times in the last few weeks. If you see anything or hear of anything suspicious, please let the authorities know.

Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce

Chamber luncheons are at noon Wednesdays at the Anchor River Inn. These luncheons are always full of great information and are open to everyone. The chamber needs a few folks to serve on the board of directors. If you are interested, call the chamber office at 235-2600.

This year’s board will be announced at the Oct. 14 chamber birthday party, at 7 p.m. at the Anchor River Inn. There will be hors d’oeuvres, cake, door prizes and a live band.

The trade show also is Oct. 14 at Chapman School. There are many available spots, so if you are interested please let us know.

Have you noticed the “Old Chapman School House” has had a facelift? The old school was built in 1952. When the current school was being built, the house was moved to property donated by Bill Rabich. It currently is owned by Anchor Point Community and Cemetery Association Inc.

The chamber has been leasing the building and is trying to restore the building to its original state, while updating heating and bathroom facilities. It’s coming along nicely and should last for many years to come.

Anchor Point Library

The library is having a yard sale Sept. 30 in its parking lot. Donations can be dropped off at the library. Hours of operation are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays. The library has a new MASST employee, Linda Conrad. MASST stands for mature Alaskan seeking skills training. This is a federally funded program that helps many people. Stop on by and greet Linda. She will be helping with library duties.

Anchor Point Senior Citizen Center

The senior center has bingo every Friday. Doors open at 6 p.m. and bingo starts at 7 p.m.

Training

Sgt. Tom Dunn, the Anchor Point Post Alaska State Troopers commander, has offered to teach a basic traffic control class at the Anchor Point Fire Hall on Sept. 26 from 6-9 p.m. The training is being offered to Anchor Point Fire/EMS volunteers as well as interested CERT folks. If you want to attend, call Glena Landua (800-478-4441 ext. 2098) or Rachel Bice at the Anchor Point Senior Citizen Center (235-7786).

Disaster Response

The Anchor Point Disaster Response group meets quarterly to examine and take action on the disaster response health of our community. This is a good time to see what’s happening and to meet the people who represent your neighborhood. Come and voice your concerns, offer your suggestions, resources and plan for disaster in your neighborhood.

Our community is a sprawling rural area in which it could be more than three days for help to reach your neighborhood. It’s time to find out how to “care for our own” during and after a disaster.

This meeting will be at 5 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Anchor Point Senior Citizen Center. For more information contact Rachel at 235-7786.

VFW Post 10221

It was good to see such a nice group of people for the Freedom Walk that was held Sept 11.

Sept. 24 will be the monthly fish fry from 4-6 p.m. Members and guests are welcome. If you are interested in joining the VFW, please call 235-4101 for more information.
