Ephim “Uppa-Cougar” Anahonak Sr.
Port Graham elder Ephim “Uppa-Cougar” Anahonak Sr., 73, died Sept. 11, 2005, at South Peninsula Hospital surrounded by members of his family. A funeral service was held Sept. 14, 2005, at St. Herman’s Russian Orthodox Church, Port Graham, with Father Michael officiating. Burial was at the Port Graham cemetery.
Pallbearers were Quentin, Charles, Joshua, Karl and Nick Moonin and Robert McMullen. A celebration of life reception followed at Port Graham School.
Ephim was born Sept. 24, 1931, in Portlock. He lived most of his life in Port Graham. He was a commercial fisherman and worked with the Beach Gang. John and Bonnie Alman of Fernridge TLC provided care for Ephim these last three years.
His family said, “He was greatly loved and respected, and will be deeply missed by all.”
Ephim was preceded in death by his parents, Nick Anahonak Sr. and Agraphinia Anahonak; his wife, Tania; sons Michael Anahonak, Pat Meganack and Antone Meganack; brothers Nick Anahonak Jr., Dan Anahonak and Dick Anahonak; and sisters Barbara Moonin and Luba Moonin.
He is survived by his sister, Nadia Ukatish; children, Leo and Natalie Anahonak, Elmer and Anesia Anahonak, Fenia Anahonak, Ephim Jr. and Darlene Anahonak and Nancy and Karl Pulliam; grandchildren, Teresa DeWitt, Charles Pulliam, Quentin McMullen, Tania Rose Smith, Bobby Sue McMullen, Joshua Anahonak, Jonathon Anahonak, Ariel Anahonak, Michael Anahonak, Kelsey Anahonak, Tania Anahonak, Leonty Anahonak, Tatiana Anahonak, Cheyanne Anahonak, Christopher Anahonak, Karen Anahonak, Brittany Anahonak, Luke Anahonak, and Elmer Anahonak Jr.; great grandchildren, Kog Smith, Zeth Meganack, Michael DeWitt, Robert DeWitt, Kevin DeWitt and Bryan Dewitt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rebecca L. Yates
Rebecca Lee Yates, 47, died Aug. 31, 2005, after a long battle with a debilitating illness. Rebecca was born on July 16, 1958. She was an unusually gifted poet, and was a member of The Homer Writers Group and the Kachemak Conservation Society. Many of her poems were published, and five were nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She placed first, second and third in the Kenai Peninsula Creative Writing Contest in 2003. She received an award from the Stranded Artists fund in 2002.
Rebecca graduated from Louisiana State University and Lewis and Clark Law College in Oregon with a degree in environmental law. She lived and taught in Juneau for eight years before moving to Homer in 2001.
Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents, Emma Charlene Addington Yates and Milton Leon Yates.
She is survived by a sister, Deleta Gail Yates, of Portland, Ore.; nephew Vernon McCann, also of Portland; niece Carly Yates of Columbia, Mo.; great-nephews Ethan and James Yates; aunt Theresa Yates of Baton Rouge, La.; and stepmother Rebecca Yates.
