Mariner Park was jammed packed Sunday night with some weird artsy event. The Spit was crawling with tourists this week -- a nattily dressed bunch, too, for a change. If you woke up with the sun -- that would be about 8 a.m. -- it had already warmed up to a comfy 50 degrees.
We've living in weird times, Betsteroids -- or, as some call it, September. It's that transition between summer and winter when our cosmic little climate zone can't make up its mind. Huh, sort of like a usual weekend, when there's so much to do we want to try every Best Bet, like these:
BEST HOMER SOUTH BET: That's what they're calling the Sundance Film Festival now -- the Homer of the South. Once again the Homer Theatre has picked some awesome flicks for its annual Documentary Film Festival. The festival starts with a gala opening today at 6 p.m. with free hotdogs and a showing of "The Cove." The fest continues through next Thursday. See Calendar, page 17, for times.
BEST HOO-AH BET: Stand down, soldiers and marines, sailors and pilots. Take a rest and relax, because Sunday is your day, the annual Veterans Picnic. This year it's in Homer out at the American Legion Post, Mile 2.5 East End Road. Bring the family for food, music and a little R & R with your comrades. The picnic runs noon-4 p.m.
BEST YEE-HAH BET: If you were expecting "Cows With Guns" on Friday, singer Dana Lyons has had to reschedule his concert for next month. You'll get a rootin' tootin' gen-you-wine cowboy, though, when cowboy poet T.J. Casey performs at 7 p.m. Friday at the Homer Council on the Arts. Tickets are $10 for HCOA members, $12 for nonmembers at the door.
