Chorus rehearsals scheduled

The Kenai Peninsula Community Chorus begins rehearsing Sept. 28 to prepare for the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra/KPCC concert April 2007 and a performance of Handel’s Messiah December 2007. Rehearsals will run through April and resume in the fall. Class fees will be charged for each session. Sign up in the Homer High School choir room at the first rehearsal. Film festival returns

Homer Theatre is hosting its third annual documentary film festival Sept. 29-Oct. 5. This year’s festival includes six films, with Adrian Belic, director of the Oscar-contender “Beyond the Call,” in Homer for the festival. Showings of the films begin at 2 p.m. each day of the festival. See related story, page 2B.

Windham Hill artists perform

Recording artists Scott Cossu and Ann Lindquist will perform at Bunnell Street Gallery at 8 p.m. Sept. 30. This is a return performance for the two musicians, with Cossu on the grand piano and Lindquist adding harmony on the bass flute. Music on the program ranges from new age to barrelhouse blues. Tickets are $25 general, $22 gallery members, one child free by reservation per ticketed adult. For more information, call 235-2662.

Workshop awakens creativity

“Awakening the Creative,” a workshop with Stewart Cubley, cofounder of The Painting Experience in San Francisco and author of “Life, Paint and Passion,” will be held at Bunnell Street Gallery Oct. 1-4. Fee is $425 plus $25 studio fee. A $100 discount for continuing painters and a $75 discount for therapists, nurses and students is offered. “Stories In Paint,” for ages 5-8, Mondays, 3:30-5:30 p.m.; first session Oct. 16, 23, 30 and Nov. 6; second session Nov. 13, 20, 27 and Dec. 4; $65.

“Look Carefully,” drawing, ages 9-13, Thursdays, 4-5:30 p.m; Nov. 2, 9, 16, 30, Dec. 7; $75.

“What Do You Want To do With Your Art?,” teenagers, Oct. 19, 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16; $75.

Bunnell Street Gallery news

Life drawing group resumes meeting on Wednesdays, 6:30-9 p.m., starting Oct. 18. Draw from a live model. Bring your own materials and $5 participation fee. Drawing horses are provided. Models are wanted. For more information, call Gaye at 235-7696.

The gallery is seeking interested members to serve on its board of directors. Three-year seats open in November. For more information, call Asia at 235-2662.

Bunnell’s annual membership meeting is 4 p.m. Oct. 15. It includes a high-tea party. In addition to voting for new board seats, there will be an open discussion of the membership regarding ideas and opportunities for the organization.

Council news

Ladysmith Black Mombaza will perform at Mariner Theatre, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13. Tickets are on sale at HCOA. HCOA does not accept credit cards, but does accept checks and cash. For more information, call 235-4288.

HCOA has issued a call for artists interested in exhibiting in “Doornamentation,” a November exhibit of holiday wreaths and door swags. The items will be donated for a silent auction. Participants can keep a portion of the selling price. Possible themes for the ornamentation include everything from occupational to recycles. For more information, call 235-4288. Seldovia welcomes musicians

In back-to-back performances, Seldovia Arts Council gives the spotlight to musicians Alison Brown on Sunday and Adam Miller on Monday. Brown and her musicians will offer a bluegrass/banjo workshop Sunday afternoon before the concert. Her music is infused with jazz, blues, Celtic and bluegrass to create a unique sound.
