Food Pantry expands its reach by working with church in AP

The Homer Community Food Pantry has recently begun to work in conjunction with the Anchor Point Church of the Nazarene to provide food to Anchor Point area residents who are sick, elderly, disabled or otherwise can't make it to Homer to pick up food.

Every Monday from 6-7 p.m. clients who can't make it from Anchor Point to Homer can pick up their food at the Nazarene church there. However, it is important for clients to be registered with the HCFP. If a person is not already on the HCFP list, needs food and can't make it to Homer, all (s)he needs to do is call the food pantry at 235-1968 and leave a message with name, phone number and number of people in the family. Then, on Monday evening food can be picked up at the Nazarene church.

The HCFP has recently received a number of large food donations. We want to recognize and thank the following donors: The ARTrageous Ball committee shared hot dogs and buns with us after their recent fund-raiser. The Lions Club gave us delicious turkey legs from their celebration. Yummy. The Elks Club sent barbecue beef, clam chowder, frozen vegetables, salad and baked potatoes. The Public Safety Committee donated several boxes of hamburger patties, watermelons and salad from their community appreciation day. The End-of-the-Road Buying Club shared several boxes of miscellaneous food items left over from their buying spree.

Every week the Community Garden has been blessing us with fresh produce and many people have been bringing us fish. All these contributions have greatly added to our stores of food so that we have been able to provide our clients with a large variety of fresh and frozen food each week.

Thank you everyone for these generous donations. It is wonderful to see the support we receive from this community and to know that we are all in this together.

Since the tourist season is coming to an end, some restaurants will soon be closing for the season. If your restaurant is closing and you have food items that will not keep over the winter, we would be happy to pick up your donation of food items. For any of the restaurants that will continue to be open, we are always happy to receive your leftover soups, sauces, deli items, salads, and breads or other bakery. Please call HCFP at 235-1968 to discuss what you have to donate and/or arrange for a pick-up.

As always, we need plastic containers; pint, quart and yogurt-size, as well as ziploc-type bags, plastic shopping bags and orange newspaper bags. These may be dropped off anytime, by placing items in the large blue tub outside the basement door of the Homer Methodist Church.

Every donation we receive, no matter how small it may be, is important to us and is appreciated. With your help, HCFP is better able to help others in need. Thanks to everyone, from individuals to large groups, for helping us make a difference in meeting the needs of our community.
