Periodically, a person swathed in fluorescent green pops up and halts traffic, and we wait for pilot car drivers to guide us past wagon trains of gravel trucks, etc. So what to do while waiting for the pilot car?
Some days when the sun shines over Kachemak Bay and the hills glow red now that it’s genuinely autumn, the Betster takes in the glory of nature and thinks how cool it is to be stuck in traffic where you can actually see nature, as opposed to the back bumper of an overpriced SUV.
So if you’re a ridge rat and get stuck waiting for the road to clear, take the Betster’s advice. Oh, and maybe you also could think about some of these Best Bets:
BEST GREAT-GRANDPA WAS A SCOUNDREL BET: Sometimes you find out more than you want to know about your ancestors, but hey, that’s the fun of genealogy. Want to learn more? Check out “Finding Your Roots: Researching Genealogy at the National Archives” from 10 a.m.-noon today at the new! way cool! Homer Public Library.
BEST WHAT’S GOING ON? BET: Sea otters have been dying in unusual numbers in Kachemak Bay, and it has scientists wondering why. Find out what’s happening at noon today when Pam Tuomi, senior veterinarian at the Alaska SeaLife Center, speaks at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. If you have the stomach for it, there’s a discovery lab and necropsy from 4-6 p.m.
BEST TELLURIDE OF THE NORTH BET: If the Homer Documentary Film Festival gets any more popular, Homer will be like the Telluride Film Festival, with Hollywood producers flying in on Lear jets and glamorous stars sashaying down the street. Until then, enjoy the six-feature fest starting Friday. (See related stories, page 2B.)
BEST SEA, SLOUGH; SLOUGH, SEA BET: Estuaries are where the river meets the sea, but hereabouts, we call it Beluga Slough and Bishop’s Beach. Celebrate National Estuaries Day from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center, with guided hikes, a discovery lab and music by up-and-coming acoustic band Work in Progress.
BEST YOU KNOW THE DRILL BET: “All politics is local,” said the late Rep. Tip O’Neill. The big general election is next month, but here on the Kenai, we get a chance to make a difference. Kenai Peninsula Borough, Homer and some service area board elections are 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday.
The Betster suggests writing haikus, reading poetry, practicing obscure ancient African musical instruments, writing letters to Mom or thinking up clever leads to those brilliant articles you read in the Homer News. One could also whip out a cell phone and chat away, but seriously, who actually talks on a cell phone when a car is stopped? That is like so Mr. Safety Bear.
