Competition helps library
It lasted nine rounds! The competition was fierce! Was it a heavyweight title fight? No, it was the Friends of the Library spelling bee held at the newly refurbished Homer Theater on Sept. 20. The winning word was "glossolalia," spelled by the Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobic Four, sponsored by Ulmer's to edge out The Bold, The Brave, The Brilliant Bravados sponsored by the Kachemak Bay Medical Clinic. Other teams in the competition were the Spellar Fellers from Jay-Brant, the Rotarheads from Kachemak Bay Rotary, the Fizzickles from Kenai Physical Therapy, the Spillers sponsored by The Grog Shop, the Stellar Teller Spellers from Wells Fargo and the Spellbound Spellunkers sponsored by Jack and Mary Lentfer. Following the bee, participants and spectators alike enjoyed the Academy award-nominated documentary Spellbound. The event was a benefit for the New Library Project.

The Friends of the Library sincerely thank all the team sponsors and the businesses that generously donated prizes as well as our erudite pronouncer, Steve Horn; our poised and personable emcee, Jennifer Mitchell; Bill Searle for the use of sound equipment; HCOA for the use of chairs for the event; and most of all Jamie Sutton and Diane Sadler at the Homer Theater for their generosity and patience in working with us to make this event happen. We wish we could name every participant and volunteer individually, but since we can't please know that we are very, very grateful to you for your contribution to the New Library Project.
