So what? We aren’t like a school kid in Lancaster County, Pa., an innocent pacifist shot dead. We aren’t some wife in Fairbanks praying that her husband in the 172nd Stryker Brigade comes home in one piece for Christmas. We aren’t one of the victims of all-too-common violence that happens all across America. We aren’t among the sick, the dying, the hurt and crying.
You want bad weeks? People like that have bad weeks. Sure, life is rough and you might as well eat dirt, but most of us are doing pretty dang good. So as that wise old soul Ann Landers would say, quitchabeefing. We’ve got it pretty dang good.
Hey, the sun did come out on Saturday, a perfect day for walking the beach all the way to tarnation and back. Borough and city elections ended Tuesday, so it’s all over except taking down the campaign signs. Best of all, we’ve got some really way cool fun stuff happening this week, like some of these Best Bets:
BEST WIDE ELBOWS BET: With most of the tourists gone, we locals get first shot at the incredible munchies laid out at First Friday openings. Oh, right: it’s not just about the food, although, hey, that’s art in itself. The usual galleries hold First Friday receptions starting at about 5 p.m. or so.
BEST SLICK SPEEDOS BET: OK, if you had to bet on a mascot swimming better, who would it be: a mariner or a bear? That’s the contest at 4 p.m. Friday at the Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center when the Homer Mariner swim team takes on the rough and tumble Kodiak Bears. Or is that tough and rumble?
BEST LOCAL BANDS BET: After all that art and swimming, settle in for a night of solid rocking by two of Homer’s best bands. You’ll have to walk up and down Pioneer Avenue to hear them. Elders on Fire plays at the Alibi and Three-Legged Mule plays at Kharacters, both starting at 10 p.m. Friday.
BEST DAD’S OLD SWEATER BET: You know that comfy old sweater that got tossed out a few spring cleanings ago? Hey, it might resurface in the great garage sale gyre. Check out McNeil Canyon Elementary School’s big garage sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Alaska’s highest-elevation school.
BEST JEDI WISDOM BET: “Do, don’t think,” Yoda said to Luke Skywalker. Or was that on “Kung Fu?” Laurel Epps lays out a similar philosophy with “Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking” at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Kachemak Community Center, a meeting of the Unitarian Universalists of Homer.
BEST HOT JETS BET: If you missed the Burning Basket a few weeks ago, check out Mavis Muller’s slide show at 6 p.m. Sunday at Amped Café.
Yeah, the Betster had a week like that.
