The Homer Middle School Husky Boys Soccer Team poses after winning the borough championships Saturday in Nikiski.
In the championship overtime game the Huskies battled a feisty Soldotna Silver team. Homer took an early lead with a goal by Josh Vantrease on a beautiful cross by Kaec Brinster. Near the end of regulation play the Huskies let down their guard and Silver scored on a corner kick. The game went to overtime.
In the overtime, a superior number of players and conditioning took over and Homer started to dominate. Halfway through the first overtime period Daugharty launched a shot on a direct kick. From out of nowhere Kenneth Schneider intercepted the shot and deflected the ball into the net with a nifty double footed shot.
That deflated the Silver team and the Huskies held on to win for the second straight year.
In the Kenai game, it was nip and tuck with Homer scoring first and Kenai coming back with a score on a penalty kick. In the end, Ben Westphal, Drew Brown, Porter Livingston and Quinn Daugharty all scored on excellent passes from their teammates. John Walsworth, Tommy Bowe, Ghen Sasakura, Ryan Navrot, and Brian Rowe anchored a stellar defense all year with only four goals in the seven games played. The final score was 4 to 1.
