Wind blows fall into town

By Jennifer Henley

Fall is here. With the mighty gusts of winds we have had in the past few days, the trees are becoming bare. Looks like we have a nice weekend heading our way, so get on out and enjoy. With all the rain we have been having, I figured we would have flooding, but it seems to have passed our path. Seward has had to evacuate in some areas.

Have a great weekend and be safe.

Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce

Don’t forget Saturday is the chamber’s 18th birthday party. This event, which will be packed full of fun, will be at the Anchor River Inn starting at 7 p.m. with cake and hors d’oeuvres and many door prizes. Live music with Dan Sullivan starts at 9 p.m. in the lounge. Everyone is welcome. The guest speaker at the chamber’s Oct. 18 luncheon will be Tom Hagberg with the Sportsman Association. The chamber lunches begin at noon at the Anchor River Inn.

Anchor Point Senior Citizens Center

Bingo begins at 7 p.m. Fridays. The center also is starting a fun and games night once a month. The first will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 17.

Anchor Point Disaster Response Program

A big thank you goes out to all who made donations for the 72-hour buckets for disabled and low-income residents. A few items are still needed, including portable, battery-operated radios; small first aid kits; can openers; flash lights with batteries; bug dope; emergency blankets; and duct tape. There is a drop-off spot at the Anchor Point Senior Center between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., weekdays.

If you haven’t got your own 72-hour kit together, now is a good time to do it.

Interested in a year of service with the Disaster Response Program? Contact the Anchor Point Senior Center at 235-7786. It’s all about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety and doing the greatest good for the greatest number.

Community Emergency Response Training

There will be disaster preparedness, hazard and terrorism training from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. The instructor will be Carolyn Roderick. Oct. 15, Jay Graham will instruct a class in medical operations and triage from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 21, Alaska State Troopers will conduct a class on triage drill, light search and rescue, and traffic control.
