On Friday, the Homer boys won 160-145, while the Homer girls won 181-91.
“It’s a good indication that they’re in good shape for regions,” said Head Swimming Coach Thad Gunther. “The girls are sitting really good in the region, if they swim how they should swim.”
Depth has been key for the girls team all year and it showed in the two weekend meets.
On Friday, they won all the relay events. Lauren Bell won the 50 meter freestyle, Sara Bitterman and Andrea West swept the 500 freestyle and Jennifer Bitterman and Jorden Greiner swept the 100 breaststroke.
On Saturday, the girls won the team event despite winning only the 200 freestyle relay.
On the boys side against Kodiak, Homer won the 200 freestyle and medley relays, Sterling Gillon won the 200 individual medley, Brian Ritchie won the 100 butterfly and Patrick Lane won the 100 freestyle.
Ritchie and Lars Matkin grabbed wins in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle events at the Skyview Invitational and they won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
“Pretty much half the team swam best times,” Gunther said, despite being in the midst of the most intense practice time of the year.
With the region meet just three weeks away, many of the swimmers will begin to work more on technique than conditioning, Gunther said.
The Mariners travel to Palmer on Friday for one of the biggest two-day meets of the year.

On Saturday, the girls beat second-place Kodiak by 33 points and the boys finished second to Wasilla by 20 points.
