HOMER’S BEST BETS

Spit Rats last weekend hunkered down for the usual fall double treat: extreme high tides and breezes out of the southwest. Only the wind shifted and the breakers rolled in from the east, which was why hockey parents didn’t dodge driftwood driving off the Spit on Sunday afternoon.

Volunteers Loren Johnson and Beverly Jones fill food boxes that are delivered to Homer Community Food Pantry clients on Monday.
Well, they call that wind schaudenfreude, Betsteroids, because the poor billy goats on the Kachemak Drive bluff took that wind and saw spendy ocean view property slump into Kachemak Bay. That’s sort of how it goes with weather in Alaska. No matter where the wind blows, somewhere someone won’t be having a good day.

Hey, life is like that, too. When a moose steps in front of the Subaru in front of you, don’t you think, “Whew, that coulda been me?” “Joy in sadness,” that’s what the German word means.

Don’t go pumping your fists in glee, though. Sooner or later there’s a moose out there with your name on it — or a wind, an earthquake or just bad plumbing. If we were all lucky, volunteer firefighters could sleep soundly and cops could let their handguns rust. If a fall chinook spares your roof, think of your neighbors who weren’t so lucky, and go give them a hand. With Friday the You Know What coming up, your luck could be running out.

What’s not running out, though, is more way-cool things to do, such as these Best Bets:

BEST NOW YOU CAN SLEEP BET: The crops are in and the Farmers’ Market is closed, so now’s the time for farmers to relax after a long season hoeing and planting and stuff. Come celebrate with your fellow farmers Friday with the Kenai Peninsula chapter meeting of the Alaska Farm Bureau at the Ninilchik Fairgrounds. A potluck dinner starts at 6 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7 p.m.

BEST STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS BET: They’re older, wiser and sneakier, those Mariner v’ball alumnae, and ready to teach the younger girlz a thing or two about spiking and stuff. Yup, it’s the annual Play Like Crazy Tournament and Alice Witte Challenge Game this Saturday. The tournament is 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and the challenge game at 6:30 p.m., all in the Alice Witte Gym at Homer High School.

BEST IN HER SHOES BET: It’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, time to remember that for some of our neighbors, home can be a dangerous place. Learn what it’s like to be a domestic violence victim at 4 p.m. Saturday at Alice’s Champagne Palace, when South Peninsula Haven House holds “Peace Begins at Home,” with an interactive event. It’s followed with music by Hoarfrost and dancing and appetizers.

BEST THE FEW, THE PROUD, THE FURRY BET: No, we’re not talking U.S. Marines after a weekend bivouac, but our cat and dog friends. Some of them wind up in the Animal Shelter, and if lucky, in loving homes. Help out your fine furry friends with the annual Fur Ball at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Homer Elks Lodge. There’s a dinner buffet and music by Elders on Fire. Tickets are $20 and benefit the shelter.

BEST ROCK THE VOTE BET: Andrew Halcro and Sarah Palin have already visited Homer, and on Oct. 31 Sarah returns. This week, candidate for governor Tony Knowles attends the District 35 Democrats’ Rockin’ Rally from 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesday at Alice’s Champagne Palace.
