Homer's best bets

Photo by Michael Armstrong, Homer News Hint of snow A dusting of snow provides the first hint of winter on a mountain ridge near the Tern Lake Junction on the Sterling Highway.
At the other End of the Road, Key West, Fla., the citizens of the Conch Republic have a nightly tradition. Just before sunset, small crowds gather in Mallory Square to watch the sun go down. Tourists and residents ooh and ah, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive green flash. Some alcohol is believed to be involved. You gotta appreciate a town that appreciates something as mundane as a sunset. If you've ever watched a Florida sunset, you know they're far from mundane.

Kinda like here. Homer has its own Mallory Square, the Baycrest Hill Pullout. Drive by there at any sunset and you'll see a little crowd watching the sun go down. Only, what with the chill in the air and all, it's more like watching a drive-in movie, because all but the hardiest souls stay in their cars. Last week during the partial eclipse, some optimistic Alaskans hoped the clouds would part and give 'em a glimpse of a crescent setting sun. No such luck, of course.

If glorious sunsets don't thrill you enough and you need something a bit more exciting, hey, try out some of these Best Bets:

BEST EYE CANDY BET: Forget Paris or New York. To heck with skinny little models. You want real women, interesting women, absolutely gorgeous women? Homer has 'em. The ladies around here have Style with a capital S. Friday night, you can see them in all their glory as they stride the catwalk for the 2004 Wearable Arts Show. Oh, and maybe a few Homer hunks will show up, too. Shows are at 6:30 and 9 p.m. at Land's End Resort. $10.

BEST ON THE TOWN I BET: Here's a good Saturday night date. Starting at 5 p.m., Otter Beach Educational Center holds a fund-raiser dinner and auction at the Homer Elks Lodge. Two Sisters provides dinner, with entertainment by Suzuki violin students and the Homer High School Swing Choir. Door prizes include a week's stay at a Cabo San Lucas, Baja, Mexico, resort. Tickets are $8 adults, $5 for children ages 7-12, children under 6 are free.

BEST ON THE TOWN II BET: After you've fueled up at the Otter Beach dinner, how about burning off some calories at the monthly square and contra dance? The dancing starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at West Homer Elementary School. Rich Kleinleder calls dances to music by the Spit City Slickers. Bring clean, soft-soled shoes for dancing. Beginners welcome. Admission is $6, with kids under 16 free.

BEST REMEMBRANCE BET: The little dark secret of our quaint little town is that we have a domestic violence problem. To honor the victims of domestic violence, and to remind us of what we sometimes deny, South Peninsula Women's Services holds a Domestic Violence Awareness Candlelight Vigil at 5:30 p.m. today at WKFL Park.
