Scholarships

High school students in grades 9-12, including home school and private school in the Homer area, including across the bay, Anchor Point and at the head of the bay, are invited by General Buckner American Legion Post 16, to compete in the National High School Oratorical Contest. The subject of an 8-10 minute "prepared oration" must be about some phase of the constitution of the United States, emphasizing duties and obligations of a citizen to the U.S. government. Each contestant will be asked to speak 3-5 minutes on one of the assigned topics. Oratorical information data sheets must be returned to the American Legion chairman on or before Dec. 1. The Homer contest will be in January, district level in Kenai in February, state competition in Anchorage in April. For more information, contact the post at 235-8864 or Bill Sheldon at 235-6789.

The Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship is awarded the first week of March. The amount of the scholarship for 2010 will be $3,000. Deadline for applications is Jan. 10. For applicants to be eligible, they must be enrolled in or applying to one of the following in an aviation field or a high school senior applying to an accredited college or university, a licensed flight school or a related certification program.
