A Homer man died in an all-terrain vehicle accident Wednesday after his ATV rolled on top of him while he crossed a ditch. Homer Police Chief Mark Robl said Shane Harrington, 39, appeared to have fallen face down and drowned in about 6-inches of water. Family discovered Harrington missing about 6 p.m. He had driven from his Soundview Avenue home about 10:30 a.m. to visit his grandfather up the hill in the subdivision near West Homer Elementary School. When family realized he hadn't shown up at his grandfather's house, they started a search with friends. Homer Police were called about 9 p.m., and had just started a search with police and Homer Volunteer Fire Department staff when a family member found Harrington's body in a ditch off a cul-de-sac a few minutes ride away from his home. Harrington was pinned under the ATV, Robl said. Police determined Harrington probably died of drowning sometime that morning. No autopsy has been ordered, and Harrington's body was released to his family. Next of kin have been notified, Robl said. Michael Armstrong can be reached at michael.armstrong@homernews.com.
