Starvin’ Marvin’s celebrates grand opening

BY MICHAEL ARMSTRONG
STAFF WRITER

Like a lot of Homer businesses or homeowners, Larry Albertson remodeled his restaurant, Starvin’ Marvin’s Pizza, the hard way — out of pocket and on his own time. A shelled-in addition overlooking the slough at Lighthouse Village has been under construction for two years.

Starvin' Marvin's Pizza owner Larry Albertson, right, with his girlfriend, Linda Weeks, are ready to serve customers in the new bar of the restaurant's addition.
“I just work on it when I can,” Albertson said. “That’s part of why it took so long.”

On Tuesday, Starvin’ Marvin’s celebrates the grand opening of the expanded facility with a Halloween party at the restaurant at the base of the Homer Spit. Starvin’ Marvin’s offers specials from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with 25 percent off any pizza, all-you-can-eat spaghetti for $10 adults and $5 for kids, pizza and draft beer for $5.95 or pizza and soda for $4.95. There is also a haunted house for children.

Albertson opened the addition in July, but he’s been putting the final touches on the interior since then. A raised sports lounge has a horseshoe-shaped bar with an Alaska scene painting by Bill Kitzmiller. Starvin’ Marvin’s offers eight beers on tap — including beers from Homer Brewery — all served in frosty-cold mugs. A satellite TV will be installed soon.

A dining room is off the bar, with a view onto the slough and across to Kachemak Bay. That ought to make it popular during the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, Albertson said. He plans to build a deck around the addition next summer.

Albertson has been in the pizza business for 30 years. The Homer Starvin’ Marvin’s has been at the Spit for 13 years. He started out in Wasilla with a restaurant called Pizza Napolitano. That’s how he wound up with the name “Starvin’ Marvin’s,” Albertson said. He wanted a catchier name and held a contest, paying out $175 for the new name.

“You don’t forget ‘Starvin’ Marvin’s,’” he said.

With seating for 100 people, the expanded restaurant offers plenty of space for parties and special events. Albertson can put together meals off the regular menu, such as prime rib and steaks or seafood.

“Whatever they want, I can cook it,” he said.

Starvin’ Marvin’s delivers within a 5-mile radius of the restaurant, Albertson said. Pizza orders also can be called in ahead for pickup. For delivery or for more information, call the restaurant at 235-0544.
