Dirt Ball fund-raiser exceeds expectations




Jeff Middleton expresses his thanks last Saturday night at the Dirt Ball, a benefit held for him and his family. Jennifer King and Ray Garrity of the band Ray-Jen Cajun watch. The Dirt Ball fed about 600 people. Some people even drove up and donated money to parking lot attendants without coming in, said Janet Fink, one of the event organizers. Over 100 items were auctioned off.

“People brought in a half-a-cow to the auction,” she said. “That’s the kind of stuff that was going on. … Every single person I talked to said it made you feel good about life.”

Middleton is a long-time Homer resident and excavator. The money raised will offset medical costs for Middleton’s surgery and pay for other expenses while he recovers.

“We are incredibly appreciative,” said Janet Middleton. “In this time where the news and TV bombard us with sadness and despair, we were given hope.”
