Homer's best bets

OK, maybe it's a cheap shot to make fun of the good-hearted men and women brave enough to hit the streets for the chance to represent our interests in Juneau or D.C. You have to give politicians credit. We're a government of the people by the people. Our representatives and senators aren't a breed apart, some special class destined to rule us. They're our friends and neighbors. As long as they don't forget that, we shouldn't either.

This week's Best Bet? Vote Tuesday. Only, if you're bone ignorant and haven't paid any attention to like the million inches of newspaper copy we've thrown at ya in an attempt to inform you on the issues, hey, do America a favor. Stay home and leave democracy to those who care.

And to get yourself in the mood for that heavy civic responsibility, hey, try out some of these other Best Bets:

BEST IT'S SCARY ON THE SPIT IN THE WINTER BET: Boarded up buildings. Empty parking lots. A chill wind blowing off the bay. Yeah, it can be mighty scary on the Spit after tourist season. The Coasties amp up the fear factor Friday with the ever-popular Haunted Hickory at the Pioneer Dock. Admission is one canned good for the Homer Food Bank. The "easily petrified" tour is from 5-6 p.m. and the "hard-core horror" tour is from 6-9 p.m.

BEST THE GOSPEL TRUTH BET: One book, 20,000 words long. Whew. Actor Brad Sherrill spent a summer memorizing the entire Gospel of John. Tonight at 7 p.m. Sherrill does a dramatic performance of the good book at the Mariner Theatre. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for students, seniors and members of the military. All proceeds benefit international children's relief organizations.

BEST DAD, YOUR LEGS LOOK HOT IN STOCKINGS BET: Yes, dear, it's true, your father did wear make-up, tease his hair and wear women's clothing, but so did everyone going to midnight showings of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" back in the 1970s. Want to see why? The Kachemak Bay Campus Student Association presents two showings of the classic horror movie Saturday night at the Homer Theatre. The 8 p.m. show is for teenagers and parents (it's rated R) with a milder, tamer atmosphere. The 10:15 p.m. show is for, uh, mature audiences only. A donation of $7 is requested. Great Scott!

BEST KEEP THAT CANDY COMING: Are the pickings slim out East End Road for trick-or-treaters? Too many long, dark driveways to walk down up on the ridge? Bring the kids into town and take them to some of the organizations happy to have costumed cuties visit. On Sunday, Halloween, the Pratt Museum holds a Halloween scavenger hunt from 1-2:30 p.m. at the museum. Friendship Terrace welcomes trick-or-treaters from 5-7 p.m. at 250 Herndon Street and South Peninsula Hospital Long Term Care welcomes trick-or-treaters from 4-8 p.m. at the hospital.

BEST WELCOME TO HOMER BET: Some new faces are in town, ready to run some of the nonprofit and public agencies here. From 5-7 p.m. tonight, there's a reception at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center for Judy Haner, the new manager of the Kachemak Bay Research Reserve.

From 4-6 p.m. Friday, South Peninsula Women's Services holds an open house at its Lake Street offices to welcome its new executive director, Peg Coleman.
