Mr. Sterling was born Feb. 15, 1918, in Fairbanks, the only son of Margaret Young Sterling and Alaska pioneer Hawley Winchell Sterling, after whom the Sterling Highway was named.
Sterling graduated from high school in Juneau and from the University of Washington.
Joe is survived by his wife of 36 years, Patricia Stanton Sterling; daughters Hawley Sterling Holmes and Adrian Sterling Bennett, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of California. He is also survived by step-daughter Lisa (Mrs. Gene) Georgetta, of Portland, Ore., and Carolyn (Mrs. Bruce) Wegner of California.

Former Alaskan Joseph H. Sterling, 87, died Oct. 26, 2005, in Vancouver, Wash. There will be no services, but the family wishes to thank Hospice and Guardian Angel Adult Family Care for their care and compassion.
