About the same time, a caller reported drivers in three pickup trucks racing on Soundview Avenue. Later, police contacted people in a blue 1984 Saab and warned them not to throw eggs. Police confiscated the eggs. At about 7 p.m., police received a report of juveniles shooting each other with a pellet gun on Herndon Street.
HFVD firefighters at about 8:20 p.m. went to a fire in a boiler building on the Sterling Highway just north of Diamond Ridge Road. Thirteen firefighters and EMTs responded with two tankers, one rescue truck, a medic unit and a utility truck, said Capt. Steve Boyle. The fire was contained in a building housing a boiler, firewood and coal. Firefighters knocked down the fire.
After the flames were down, the building's owner offered to use his backhoe to take the metal roof off. Firefighters stood by with fire hoses as he took the roof off and moved firewood. The fire was fully extinguished and firefighters verified it had not spread beyond the building.
Firefighters said they thought creosote buildup in a chimney stack might have caused the fire. The fire department reminds homeowners to check and clean chimneys, and offers brushes and extension rods for free check-out.
