Kachemak Bay Campus joins ‘The Big Read’

The Kachemak Bay Campus of Kenai Peninsula College, University of Alaska Anchorage, has joined 71 other U.S. communities in the national “Big Read” project. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest and the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, the program encourages literary reading and aims to address a national decline in literary reading.

From April to June 2007, under a $9,000 grant from the Big Read project, Kachemak Bay Campus conducts activities related to author Amy Tan’s novel, “The Joy Luck Club,” in collaboration with the Pratt Museum, the Homer Public Library, Homer Flex School, Homer Connections Program, Pier One Theater, Kenai Community Library and Seward Community Library. Activities include book discussion, a theatrical reading and film screenings. The program culminates in a public reading by Tan on June 9 at the 2007 Kachemak Bay Writers’ Conference.

According to a 2004 NEA Survey, “Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading,” less than half the American population reads literature, defined as novels, short stories, plays or poetry, including popular genres such as mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, romance as well as contemporary and classic literary fiction.
