Poster contest: The U.S. Department of Justice is offering a poster contest for fifth-graders to highlight the nation’s efforts to reunite missing children with their families. More than 1.3 million children are reported missing each year, according to the Department of Justice. For more information, see http://ojjdp.ncjrs.org or www:amberalert.gov/

Chapman School

Nov. 11: Memorial service for Vi Chapman, 6 p.m.

Fireweed Academy

Nov. 10: Amelia Robertson speaks about her semester-at-sea experience, 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Nov. 15: Jodi Miller speaks about her work with healthcare in Africa, 9:30 a.m.

First and third Wednesdays of month: Academic Policy Committee, 3:30-5 p.m.

Homer Flex School

Nov. 22: Thanksgiving feast potluck, 11:30 p.m., students and families.

Homer High School

Nov. 9: PTA, library, 7 p.m.

DDF news: The DDF team recently competed at Dimond High School in Anchorage with the following results: Luke Westerburg, second place, foreign extemporaneous speaking; Clinton Edminster, third place, extemporaneous commentary; Hunter Multz-Matthews, fourth place, Lincoln-Douglas debate; George Gustafson and Patrick Schneider, fourth place, public forum debate. Also participating were Heath Emery and Hunter Multz-Matthews, Lincoln Douglas debate; Kristen Tonga, Clara Noomah, Patrick Schneider and George Gustafson, public forum debate; Melissa Lettis, Oshi Wills and Clinton Edminster, readers theatre team. Next tournament is at Service High School, Nov. 17-18.

Homer Middle School

Nov. 27-Dec. 1: Book fair.

Dec. 6: Geography Bee during first period class. Top 10 finalists compete in the final school bee in January; winner competes in state bee in Anchorage March 30; winner of the State Bee competes in National Bee in Washington, D.C., May 22 and 23. McNeil Canyon Elementary School

Nov. 16: Fall carnival, 6-8 p.m., public invited. The carnival’s theme is “Underwater.” There will be prizes for best costumes, games, food and fun for all. Game tickets are 5 cents; most takes cost two tickets. For more information, contact the school at 235-8972.
