Mr. Nick C. Varney of Unhinged Alaska fame pulled his fingers away from his winter king fishing rod long enough to e-mail his picks for Week 9.
And wouldn’t you know, the lucky son-of-a-Vibrex-No.2-spinner got 13 out of 14 picks right to win the Pigskin Picker.
Unfortunately, since his column appears in this here newspaper, it might constitute an overrule by the forces that be that set up the whole prizes-can’t-go-to-newspaper-employees-or-their-families rule.
I don’t know if he’s an employee, but he certainly is family.
Although, personally, I couldn’t care less, since my best-of-the-season 11-3 record in Week 9 was obliterated like one of Nick’s egg clusters during silver season.
Unfortunately for all of us, I have this eerie suspicion that if we don’t pay up, we’re going to get an eyeful in his next column.
Is this blackmail? Could this debacle destroy the very fabric of the Homer News teamwork environment? Could Varney become the Terrell Owens of the lower Peninsula?
Stay tuned, because I just don’t know.
