Mamie (Yurkovsky) Velsko, 94, died Nov. 6, 2010. A service is 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11, 2010, at the Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Russian Orthodox Church in Ninilchik. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, N.Y.
She was born May 24, 1916, to John and Eva Yurkovsky, in Olyphant, Penn. She had seven children and worked as a telephone operator for Ma Bell telephone company for 20 years. She lived in Mineola, N.Y. until she retired and then moved to Worcester, N.Y. where she and her husband lived until he passed away. In 1989, she moved to Homer to be closer to her four boys. In 2003, she moved to Kenai. Mamie was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a selfless person and led a vibrant life. People liked her and she made friends wherever she went.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter Velsko; her brothers, Andrew Yurkovsky and Peter Yurkovsky; and her sister Leona Wislosky. She is survived by four sons and three daughters: Peter Velsko of Homer; Paul Velsko of Girdwood; John Velsko of Homer; Andrew Velsko of Timber Lake, S.D.; Sonia Sena of Mission Viejo, Calif.; Barbara Moya of Walnut, Calif,; and Vera Galovic of Garfield, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
