Homer's best bets

Photo by Carey James, Homer News

This past week the talk has been all about Red America and Blue America. Heck, that old map from the last election got dusted off and updated showing not just red and blue states, but red and blue counties. Hey, why not crank up the scale and show red and blue precincts?

Then some political cartographer came out with a map showing percentage of support for Bush or Kerry, mixing both colors. Suddenly the map changed, and except for a few states one way or the other, a nation divided turned into a nation united, purple mountains majesty indeed. We're Purple America, Betsteroids.

After the sturm und drang of the election, it comes down to this. When that sloppy wet kiss of winter's first snowstorm comes down and cars and trucks slip into the ditch, who among us is so petty we'd refuse to help a neighbor out because of a bumper sticker?

If you can stay on the roads and sidewalks, yo, check out some of these Best Bets:

BEST CRISP SALUTE BET: With the new Veterans Memorial at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center, Homer can have an actual Veterans Day parade down Pioneer Avenue and Main Street. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. today at Homer High School, proceeds down Heath Street to Pioneer Avenue, then down Main Street to the Bypass and over to the memorial. A short service honoring our nation's veterans is at about 11 a.m.

BEST SLAP THE MAT BET: Didn't get enough of Homer wrestling with Tela O'Donnell in the Olympics? The next generation shows their stuff as Homer wrestlers hold their first home match of the season. Friday night, the Mariners take on teams from Nikiski, Palmer and Kodiak starting at 4 p.m. at the Homer High School gym. Saturday at 10 a.m., it's a Round Robin Rumble, with 10 teams grappling.

BEST SKINNY BOARDS BET: OK, so maybe that snow didn't last, but hey, soon enough the ski trails will be in. Meanwhile, join the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club at its general meeting from 6-8 p.m. today at Captain's Coffee on Pioneer Avenue. Kyle Lints presents a slide show from his adventure last summer crossing the Harding Ice Field.

BEST FOUR LEFT FEET BET: The new Animal Shelter has its roof on, and what a better way to celebrate closing in with the annual Friends of Pets Fur Ball from 6 p.m.-midnight Saturday at the Homer Elks Lodge? Admission is $15 with dinner and $5 without dinner, with music by Navigator and an auction. Tickets are available at the Homer Bookstore and Barb's Video. Proceeds benefit the shelter fund and other programs.
